Alphabet Letter K, Medieval Illuminated Letter K, Painted Initial K, Medieval Alphabet, Renaissance - Medieval Illuminated Letter K This is an archival 4 x 6 print of my original artwork, painted in acrylics on goatskin parchment. I chose this letter by how the K was created and how the knight in the background gives it dimensions. Over 1, motifs reprinted from a rare book of design first published in France in Presents ornate Cyrillic and Greek letters, corners, borders, page heads, and more as they appeared in illuminated Russian manuscripts dating from the 10th through the 16th centuries. Royalty-free.
K indly provided by Sandra Hindman of Les Enluminures. Sandra is a leading expert on Medieval and Renaissance manuscript illumination. Professor Emerita of Art History at Northwestern University and owner of Les Enluminures, Sandra is author, co-author, or editor of more than 10 books, as well as numerous articles on history, illuminated manuscripts and medieval rings. There are also a number of manuscripts in the Cotsen Children’s Library; and a small number of other manuscripts in other manuscript series or bound with printed books. In addition, the Manuscripts Division also has thousands of medieval and Renaissance documents, especially in the John Hinsdale Scheide Collection (C); Ernest Cushing.
This “golden age” of manuscript illumination lasted until the arrival of Gutenberg’s printing press in , signaling the beginning of the end of hand-made illuminated manuscripts. During the early Middle Ages most books were used by priests and monks for liturgical purposes. A manuscript richly decorated in color only, without actually having gold or silver is, technically, not illuminated. Members of the Cistercian Order were permitted to ornament their manuscripts but not to illuminate them, as gold was thought to be frivolous and inappropriate to an austere way of life.
